Headline speed is only one part of the experience
Broadband speed is normally advertised in megabits per second (Mbps), but the number on the package is not the only thing that determines how the connection feels. Download capacity matters for streaming and large files, upload capacity affects calls and cloud services, while latency and jitter influence responsiveness.
Wi-Fi can also become the limiting factor. A fast full-fibre service cannot deliver its full potential to a device if that device is connected through weak or congested wireless coverage.
Common connection types
ADSL uses copper telephone lines and is generally the slowest fixed-line option. FTTC brings fibre to a street cabinet and uses copper for the final section. Full fibre or FTTP carries fibre directly to the premises and can provide much higher download and upload capacity with more consistent performance.
Fixed wireless, 4G and 5G broadband can be useful alternatives where wired services are limited, although performance can vary with signal strength, cell load and radio conditions.
Choosing a package
Choose capacity for the household rather than one device. A connection used for several 4K streams, cloud backups, gaming downloads and video meetings needs more headroom than a connection used mainly for browsing and email. Upload speed deserves particular attention for home working and content creation.
Do not assume the most expensive package automatically solves Wi-Fi problems. Test close to the router and, where possible, compare with Ethernet before upgrading the broadband service.
How to compare results fairly
Use the same device, browser, server and test size when comparing changes. Pause large transfers and repeat the test at different times. A wired test provides the best baseline for separating the broadband line from local wireless conditions.
