Why is my result lower than the advertised speed?
Advertised figures may describe expected or maximum service performance, while a browser test includes your device, Wi-Fi, local network and route to the test server. Background traffic and busy periods can also reduce the measured throughput.
Should I use a large test size?
Use enough data for the connection to reach stable throughput. A 100 MB test is a sensible default for many modern connections. Faster full-fibre services may benefit from 500 MB or 1 GB, while smaller tests reduce data usage on slower or metered connections.
Why does the location look wrong?
IP-based location is approximate and often identifies the provider network rather than the exact device location. Browser geolocation can be more precise when permission is granted, but it is optional.
How often should I test?
Repeat tests when diagnosing a problem and compare similar conditions. Testing once over Ethernet and once over Wi-Fi is particularly useful. For intermittent issues, record results at different times rather than continuously running large transfers.
Does a speed test prove my ISP is at fault?
